Project Summary

The Cyber Schools initiative is a TY programme to introduce students to the world of cybersecurity. The initiative brings together cybersecurity experts from industry, Cyber Ireland (the cyber industry association), Cyber researchers and Calmast, SETU’s STEM Engagement Centre to roll out an interactive problem based cybersecurity initiative in 100 schools across Ireland.

The 5 week programme consists of weekly, one-hour sessions introducing students to the fascinating world of cybersecurity. Schools will also have a visit from a cybersecurity professional to give hands-on insight into what it’s like to work in this diverse and exciting field.

Cybersecurity is a booming industry in Ireland. According to Cyber Ireland, the number of cybersecurity jobs will double between 2024 and 2030 nationally offering a wealth of opportunity for young people entering the field. Cyber Ireland member companies are keen to inspire the next generation of professionals.

Programme activities include hands-on tasks – ‘Defend the Hospital’, a cyberattack simulation where students protect sensitive data , ‘Solve a Murder Using Digital Forensics’ has the students investigating and uncovering digital clues. Other activities include, ‘Hide Secret Messages Using Steganography’ where students learn how to encode and decode hidden messages, while ‘How to Rob a Bank’ is a fun educational activity exploring cyber fraud. An online role model portal and age appropriate video on cyber fraud will also be developed. These sessions will provide a deeper look at the tools, skills, and career opportunities available in the field of cybersecurity, whilst making students less vulnerable to cyber fraud.
