Project Summary
Circus Science by the Sea on Tour takes science engagement to small rural West Coast communities where science capital is low. It builds upon and disseminates the work of Circus Science by the Sea Festival (Nov 25 Research Ireland funding pending) to build conversation and create fun, relevant, excellent science experiences (rather than events) with and for rural communities, in the tradition of bringing circus to you, rather than you having to come to ‘us’.
It focusses on interests and concerns shared by these communities – including environmental and maritime – and celebrates their expertise in these areas. The ’26 Tour builds on the learnings and success of two previous years, with increased reach to more rural locations with science shows, activities and workshops. In addition, for ’26 as well as bringing brand new shows and workshops, we’re introducing two further elements for returning locations: A hands-on interactions and discussion session on plastic degradation with our Tour partners from Biorbic, Chemistry Dept, Trinity College Dublin; and an ‘open call’ for communities to contribute a session to the programme.
The ’26 Tour includes 3 previously visited (Ballycroy, Ceathrú Thaidhg, Curraun – Mayo) and 6 new communities (Doohoma, Blacksod – Mayo; Falcarragh, Whitecastle, Inver – Donegal; Connemara – Galway) over 7 weekends in May/June 2026. In all cases, we work through and with local community groups to help us design the activities from a menu of accessible scientific experiences developed by Circus250 with the local community in Achill.
