Team Member Salary Scales

Revised team member salary scales reflect increases from January 2024 to June 2026 provided for in the Public Service Agreement 2024-2026.

Revised salary scales will take immediate effect and should be used in the preparation of applications submitted to Research Ireland. For multi-annual grant applications, applicants should include future increases in their budget requests. Applicants should consider realistic start dates when estimating costs and should contact Research Ireland well in advance of call deadlines where they have specific questions relating to budget preparation.  Applicants are reminded to consult with their Research and Finance Offices in the preparation of their budgets. All budgets must be endorsed by the applicant’s Research Body prior to submission.

Please also note that stipend of PhD students funded by Research Ireland has increased to €25,000 with effect from 1st January 2025.

Grant Budget Policy (Interim)

Research Ireland’s Grant Budget Policy (Interim) describes budgetary provisions and requirements governing the submission of applications (proposals) to, and the allocation of Grants awarded under, Research Ireland-led ‘Research’ Programme Calls.

Research Ireland acknowledges that, following the award of a Grant, the approved budget may need to be modified over time. As such, it is recognised that a certain degree of flexibility in the design of revised budgets is required to best achieve the objectives of the funded Research Programme or that prescribed by external experts following a ‘remote’ or ‘on-site’ progress review.

Where budget revisions necessitate Research Ireland’s approval (see provisions in the Letter of Offer), such revisions may be considered permissible, provided that they are appropriately justified within the terms of the corresponding Letter of Offer, Research Ireland’s Grant General Terms and Conditions, Research Ireland’s guidance on Budget Reallocations and any other relevant guidance or policy.

No-Cost Extension Policy

Research Ireland may authorise an extension to the expiry date of a grant, as specified by the grant term in the Letter of Offer, where grant funds remain unspent. These funds must be used to complete the original objectives of the research programme. Typically, this no-cost extension (NCE) will be granted for a period of 6-12 months, and this determination will depend on the grant term. As this is a no-cost extension, no additional funds may be requested.

Budget Reallocations Policy

Research Ireland may authorise a reallocation of the approved budget to assure successful completion of the original objectives of a funded research programme. A budget reallocation requires a written request and approval from Research Ireland in the following cases:

  1. The grant recipient wishes to move funds in excess of €20,000 to or from any budget category.
  2. The grant recipient wishes to move funds in excess of €20,000 between calendar years.
  3. Movement of any funds to or from the Equipment category.
